FOWLMERE FUN DAY 2000

in aid of the
Fowlmere Community Chest Charity.

This event took place on Sunday 27th August 2000 in glorious sunshine. Events started at 11am with the Friendship Club's Tombola held in the 'pump shed' - The brick built Memorial Well dating to 1911. There were other stalls outside the Queens Head pub, which were very popular during the morning.

They were the cake stall run by Mandy Thornton & Pat Willis and Shirley and Pat Rowley's Art and Craft stall. The cake stall raised £100 for the Community Chest and £100 for Melbourn Village College. Most of the older children in the village attend Melbourn Village College.

The Ladies wheelbarrow Race, a new event for the village, closely followed this. In this race with one lady in the wheelbarrow and another pushing, stops were made to collect plastic bags of water. There was a lot of water bombing of competitors I'm afraid. Marshall's did a great job stopping the traffic for these events.

The next event was the infamous Barrel Race down the High Street and back, stopping at four places (three real pubs and one 'ghost' pub) to 'down a pint'.

Fowlmere Golf Society ran golf event at the rear of the Swan House Inn, which proved most popular with all ages.

Water was greatly in evidence for the next event in which certain people were volunteered to sit in specially made stocks outside the Swan House Inn. Others then paid 10p to hurl soaking wet sponges at the unfortunate victims, including Steve Count Landlord of the Queens Head.

Everybody greatly admired Sarah Dixon, chairman of Fowlmere Parish Council, for taking part as a victim.
